Things To Do In The Hives In April

From the bees’ point of view, things are great! The weather has improved and blossoms are appearing.

The bees are bringing pollen and nectar into the hive and the Queen is busily laying eggs.  The population is growing fast, including some drones.

If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to do your first comprehensive inspection of the hive. Can you find evidence of the Queen? Are there plenty of eggs and brood? How do the combs look? Do any need replacing?

Some folks believe in reversing the hive bodies to encourage growth of the colony. If you want to try this, now is the time to do it.

Here in Ohio, the honey flow has already started. Time to add the honey supers.  The flowers have been blooming since March.

Now is the time to install new packages and make splits if you desire. Make sure your hives are painted and ready for your bees to arrive.

I’m excited because I’m starting TWO new hives this year!!
